How to Play Lawn Bowls
The objective is to roll the bowl as close as you can to the kitty or jack. The closer you can roll it, the better.
To begin each end, the jack is rolled across the entire green length. It is centered in the middle of the rink, wherever it stops.
The lawn bowls bowling green is separated into rinks. The rinks are parallel playing strips.
In the most simplest competition, one of the competitors will flip a coin to determine who wins the mat. The winner starts part of the competition by placing the mat. The jack is rolled to the opposite end of the green and that will be the target.
After the jack stops, it is put in the middle of the rink. At that point, the competitors will try to roll their bowls in the direction of the jack. A bowl must stop inside the area of the rink in order to remain in play.
While the bowl is on its path, it may curve outside the boundaries but when it stops, it must be in play. If a bowl goes into the ditch it is out of play. The exception is if it touches a jack while it is on its path.
Those who are new to lawn bowls should know that the bowl actually has a bias, meaning it is not completely round in shape. The way the bowl is designed causes it to curve inwardly as the object begins to slow down.
The bowl can curve in either way, depending on how it's held while being delivered.
The green is completely flat and is between 37 - 40 square metres. There are rinks that are part of the green. The rinks are between 5.5 metres - 5.8 metres across. Because of this structure, multiple games can be played simultaneously.
